Carlinghow: what to know before moving day
Carlinghow Lane is a gradual hill, and among the streets off it is a run named after gems: Pearl Street, Ruby Street, Amber Street, Emerald Street, Diamond Street and Sapphire Court. Ealand Road, Ings Road, Cross Bank Road and Summerbridge Close are close by. Summerbridge Close covers roughly the ground of Carlinghow Old Hall, a timber-framed manor house recorded in detail and then demolished in the late 1960s.
Batley Beck runs parallel to Bradford Road through the district. Two older buildings are listed: an early 18th-century stone house at 2 and 4 South Bank Road, and Carlinghow Mill, a late 18th-century watermill since altered and extended. St John's Church, of 1878 to 1879, is Grade II. Batley General Hospital stood on Carlinghow Hill from 1881 until it closed in 1988, and Batley Grammar School has been on the same hill since 1878. The Wilton council estate and Wilton Park, known locally as Batley Park, are also in Carlinghow.
How the van gets to Carlinghow
The A652, Bradford Road, is the main road through Carlinghow, running between Birstall and Batley town centre, so from junction 27 of the M62 the van comes through Birstall and straight down it. Carlinghow Lane and Cross Bank Road lead off into the housing, and Carlinghow Hill heads up towards Upper Batley.

Carlinghow: questions before you book
Carlinghow once had a railway station; is there one now?
No. Carlinghow station opened in 1872 on the branch from Batley to Birstall and closed as a wartime economy in 1917, and passenger trains never came back. Batley station, on the Huddersfield line, serves the town now, and the move goes by road along Bradford Road.
