Upper Batley: what to know before moving day
Big stone villas are the mark of the place. Batley Hall was first built by William Copley in 1370, though the present house dates from 1857; its gatehouses are now ordinary homes and the Old Hall is a residential home. In the grounds stands a 17th-century banqueting hall, listed at Grade II*, which may have begun as a dovecote or a private chapel.
Upper Batley Lane and Upper Batley Low Lane are the roads through the district. Old Hall Road, where an 1869 boundary stone stands opposite Batley Hall, is mapped as a track rather than a made-up street, as is Old Hall Mews, so a house on either may mean the van stops on the lane and the last stretch is done by trolley. Long Croft View, Hollybank Avenue and The Balk are nearby, with Croft House Farm and Cliff Wood on the edge.
Two schools share the hill: Batley Grammar School, on Carlinghow Hill since 1878, and Upper Batley High School, a boys' school opened in 1959 as Batley Boys High School. Upper Batley also had its own station, on the Batley to Adwalton Junction line from 1863 to 1952, and the signal box still survives.
How the van gets to Upper Batley
From junction 27 of the M62 the van comes south through Birstall, then up to the district by Upper Batley Lane from the Birstall side or by Carlinghow Hill from Carlinghow. The B6123, called Timothy Lane and Batley Field Hill here, passes close by and links to the rest of Batley.
