Cellar heads, stone doorsteps and the turn at the bottom

Going down is harder than going up. On a cellar staircase the machine wants to run away from you, the head height drops as you descend and the turn at the bottom is usually the pinch point rather than the doorway at the top. Two photographs settle it: the top of the stairs looking down, and the bottom looking back up. From those we can say whether a full-size washer will go, whether it travels on its back edge, or whether it will not fit at all.

Above ground the streets add their own problems. Blakeridge Lane, Purlwell Lane and the rows through Batley Carr are setted, steeply cambered and parked nose to tail with no passing place for a long van, and the stone step straight onto the pavement means there is no flat ground to set a machine down on. If it genuinely will not go, the options are a slimline model or keeping the machine on the ground floor, and you will have that answer while there is still time to change the order.

Do you connect it up down there?

If the fittings are standard, yes: cold feed and waste hose back on and checked for weeps. Cellar plumbing in these houses is often improvised, though, and where it has been cobbled together it needs a plumber's eye rather than ours. Either way we get the machine down, into position and level on the floor.

Can the old machine come back up and go away with you?

Up, yes. Away, no. Bringing the old one up out of the cellar and putting it in the yard, the garage or another address is part of the job if you ask. Disposal and recycling are not something we offer, so that one goes through the council or a licensed carrier.
