Staincliffe: what to know before moving day
Until the 19th century Staincliffe was a hamlet: Staincliffe Hall, which dates from at least the 17th century, a few farms and some 18th-century cottages, many of which survive among later building. It grew with the heavy woollen trade. Christ Church, the parish church, was consecrated in 1867 and designed, with its vicarage and school, by William Henry Crossland.
Today most homes are 19th-century houses, with a couple of council estates built in the 1950s and a run of small shops on Halifax Road. The estates have their own names on the map, such as Thorncliffe Estate, Woodsome Estate and Hill Top Estate, alongside Staincliffe Hall Road, Staincliffe Road and Squirrel Hall Drive. Staincliffe Park, with its bowls greens, is the main open space.
Dewsbury and District Hospital is on Healds Road here, on the site of the old Dewsbury Union workhouse. It opened in 1980 as Staincliffe General Hospital. If you live close to it, tell us which side of the hospital your street is on and where a long van can pull in without blocking anyone.
How the van gets to Staincliffe
From Bradford, take the M606 to junction 26 and follow the A638 south through Cleckheaton, Liversedge and Heckmondwike. Beyond Heckmondwike it meets Batley Road, the B6123, by the Junction Inn, and becomes Halifax Road through Staincliffe, with a crossroads at Dewsbury Gate Road and the turn for Healds Road and the hospital.
