Birchcliffe: what to know before moving day
The name comes from Birchcliffe Baptist Church, founded by Daniel Taylor in 1764. The present building opened lower down the hill in 1899, closed for worship in the 1970s and is now the Birchcliffe Centre, Grade II listed, with a 1922 war memorial in its grounds and a listed arched entrance on Birchcliffe Road. Stubbings Infant School, in the listed Stubbings Schools building of 1878, stands beside the road near the bottom.
Housing is mostly 19th-century stone. Royd Terrace, a listed row of 1848, is close by, and on Keighley Road a listed terrace of house-over-house dwellings has a basement entry at the front, so one home sits above another. School Street, Birch Villas, Cliffe Street and Balmoral Street run off the slope, and one lane named simply Birchcliffe is surfaced in rough cobbles. How the van gets to Birchcliffe
Birchcliffe Road starts from the A6033 where Commercial Street meets Keighley Road, a short way up from the A646 through the town centre. At the top it reaches Sandy Gate, where Wadsworth Lane and Sandy Gate Lane continue towards Chiserley and Old Town. Coming from Bradford, the van approaches through Halifax and then follows the A646 up the valley into Hebden Bridge.
