Ackworth: what to know before moving day

The four parts are High Ackworth, Low Ackworth, Ackworth Moor Top and Brackenhill,. Two main roads cross the parish: the A638 between Wakefield and Doncaster runs through Moor Top and Brackenhill, and the A628 from Barnsley to Pontefract runs north through the middle. Pontefract lies to the north, Hemsworth to the south, and Thorpe Audlin and Kirk Smeaton to the east.

It is an old place with a lot of old stone. The parish has 36 listed buildings, most of them houses and cottages, and Ackworth School is Grade I: built in the 1750s and 1760s as a branch of the Foundling Hospital in London, and a Quaker school since 1779. The Ackworth Hoard, 52 gold and 539 silver coins thought to date from the Civil War, was found in a village garden in 2011. The parish council runs a community centre on Wakefield Road at Moor Top, and bins and council tax go through Wakefield Council.

How the van gets to Ackworth

From Bradford the drive is roughly 40 to 55 minutes, depending on which part of the parish you are in. Pontefract Road and Barnsley Road, both the A628, are the main road north to south; Station Road leads east to Low Ackworth; Purston Lane, the B6421, heads north towards Featherstone. The A628 through the village has a 7.5 tonne weight limit for its tight bends and narrow sections.
