Ackworth Moor Top: what to know before moving day
Moor Top grew on stone. Quarries here were said in 1848 to give freestone of excellent quality, and an 1894 description found several good houses, the rest being cottages of miners and quarryworkers. Street names still carry that past: Quarry View, The Quarry and Stonegate Lane sit a short walk from the main road. The Masons Arms on Bell Lane is dated 1682 and is one of the oldest buildings in the parish, and Holt's Cottage and Cleveland Lodge nearby are listed too.
On Wakefield Road you pass the Boot and Shoe, All Saints' church, the parish council community centre and the cricket club. Bell Lane runs past the Outwood primary academy to a listed guide post at its junction with Barnsley Road, and there is a public car park on Bell Lane. Housing streets off the main road include Moor Top Avenue, Hardaker's Lane, Gordonsfield and the Rosslyn streets. Where a cottage door opens straight onto the pavement, measure the doorway before a large wardrobe or sofa is booked in.
How the van gets to Ackworth Moor Top
The A638 and the A628 meet at the roundabout next to the Beverley Arms. From the Wakefield side the A638 comes in as Wakefield Road through Brackenhill. Heading north into the rest of the village, note that the A628 from the Moor Top roundabout through Ackworth carries a 7.5 tonne weight limit because of tight bends and narrow sections.
