Brackenhill (Ackworth): what to know before moving day
Stone made Brackenhill. An 1894 account called it almost entirely inhabited by stoneworkers, and in 1927 the village still housed men from the quarries and from Hemsworth Colliery; three of the five people killed in the colliery's 1879 explosion came from here. The Brackenhill Light Railway served the quarries from 1914 to 1962, and part of its route from Mill Lane to Kinsley Common is now a cycle path.
Today the A638, called Wakefield Road at this point, is the spine. The Angel, a fish shop, a butcher and the Esso garage line it, and Brakenhill Post Office sits on Lo Lane. Behind the main road are closes and ways: Barnsdale Way, Hayfield Way, Paddock Close, Seals Drive and Pasture View on one side, with Victoria Street, Garden Street and Linden Terrace closer to the main road. The Tarmac asphalt plant and Brackenhill Allotments are close by, so give the exact street, not just the village name.
How the van gets to Brackenhill (Ackworth)
The A638 is the road to know. It begins at Chain Bar, junction 26 of the M62, where the M606 from Bradford joins, and runs through Wakefield, Crofton and Nostell. East of Wragby it meets the B6428 at a roundabout at Hessle and Hill Top, then crosses the old light railway line and passes through Brackenhill before reaching the roundabout with the A628 at Ackworth Moor Top.
