Moving in Thunder Bridge: what to know first
Thunder Bridge is a couple of dozen houses in a wooded dip, many of them old stone cottages in rows along Thunder Bridge Lane, with the Woodman Inn in the middle. Birks Lane, which crosses the dike on the old bridge, is about four metres wide, unlit and has a pavement on one side only, so a long van parked on it all but closes it. Plan for the van to stand where the lane opens out, and tell us how far that is from your door.
Timberwood, the newer group of houses, is a private road, so check with the residents' arrangements before the day that a van may come in and wait. The listed cottages date from the 18th century, so measure the front door and the tightest turn of the stairs before booking a large sofa or wardrobe. The lanes run under trees and have no lighting, so a winter move is best finished before dusk.
Thunder Bridge: the local picture
Six buildings and structures here are listed. The bridge itself, of the early 19th century, is a single segmental arch with a round abutment and domed cap at its south end and inscriptions on the north parapet. Along Thunder Bridge Lane, No. 3 is an 18th-century house at the end of a row, Nos. 15 and 17 are a late 18th-century pair, and the Woodman Inn was two houses before it became a pub. Nos. 5, 9 and 11, three storeys high, were four houses later taken into the pub. Birks Gate, an early 18th-century small country house, is close to the bridge.
Hartley Bank Wood and the Woodland Trust's Lower Hartley Bank Wood wrap round the hamlet, and Renshaw Royd Spring is a little further off. Grange Lane and Dam Hill are the other lanes, and Timberwood is a private road of newer homes with the postcode HD8 0PB. On a lane of old cottages, doorways and kerbside space can both be tight, so describe them when you book.
How the van gets to Thunder Bridge
Thunder Bridge Lane leaves the A629 Penistone Road, a 50 mph road here, and runs down about 800 metres to the hamlet, where Birks Lane crosses the bridge towards Stocksmoor. From Bradford the van takes the M606 and M62, then the A629 south through Huddersfield, roughly 30 to 45 minutes in all.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 30 to 45 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Thunder Bridge
Is the Woodman Inn a good landmark to give the driver?
Yes. The Woodman Inn is on Thunder Bridge Lane at the heart of the hamlet, a few doors from the listed cottages and about 100 metres from the bridge. Give the house number or name as well, and the driver can go straight to the door.
Can the van use the Woodman Inn car park?
Not without the pub's say-so, since it is the inn's own car park. Plan on loading at your door or on your drive instead: describe the frontage and the stop is planned before the price is agreed.
Which station is closest to Thunder Bridge?
Stocksmoor, a short way along Birks Lane, with trains every hour to Huddersfield and to Sheffield by way of Barnsley. Shepley station is the other option, a little further south.
