Thorpe (Idle): what to know before moving day
Thorp Garth was where the trams from Bradford ended. A tram service ran to Thorpe Garth from 1901 to 1931, and trolleybuses took over after that. The road still links Bradford Road with Albion Road, and Ley Fleaks Road, Cavendish Road and Woodfield Close all come off it. Note the spelling: the road is Thorp Garth, while the school and chapel use Thorpe.
Much of the housing near the junction is late Georgian sandstone. 4 Thorp Garth, a three-storey corner shop from about 1820 to 1830, keeps its 19th-century shop windows, and 8 and 10 Thorp Garth are a pair of cottages from about 1800. There are listed 18th-century rows at 37 to 43 Albion Road with 5 and 7 Union Yard, and on Ley Fleaks Road, while The Brewery Tap was a house before it became a pub in the 19th century. Stone cottages of that age can have tight turns inside, so a bed or wardrobe may need to come apart first; dismantling is part of the job.
Thorpe Primary School is on Albion Road, and Thorpe Methodist Church stands on a site used for worship since the first chapel of 1814; the present building replaced the 1871 chapel after it was pulled down around 1981.
How the van gets to Thorpe (Idle)
Bradford Road comes up from Five Lane Ends and meets Thorp Garth at its southern end, which is the simplest way in with a van. From the green in the middle of Idle, Albion Road runs past the library to the top of Thorp Garth. Thorp Garth carries a 30 mph limit, while the narrower western end of Albion Road is signed at 20 mph.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 10 to 25 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Thorpe Edge is a separate estate off Harrogate Road, built mostly in the 1950s on farmland, with the eight-storey Fairhaven Green flats; York House there was demolished in 2024 and 2025. Thorpe is the older part of Idle around Thorp Garth. Check which one the address means before booking.
Is it Thorp or Thorpe?
Both appear. The road is Thorp Garth, while the school and the Methodist church use Thorpe, and the trams from Bradford ran to Thorpe Garth from 1901 to 1931. Use the spelling on your letters; the BD10 postcode settles it.
