Longlands: what to know before moving day
High Street is Idle's main street, with shops, pubs, a medical centre and a dental practice, and it holds some of the oldest houses in the district. 32, 34 and 36 High Street are an early 17th-century gritstone block, one doorway still with its ogee-arched lintel, and 30 High Street and its barn are probably of the same age. Garth Fold, a former coach house and cottages, stands around a partly cobbled yard, and Town Well Cottages step down a sloping site, two storeys on one side and three on the other.
At the top end, Holy Trinity was built in 1828 to 1830 as a Commissioners' church to a design by John Oates, and Idle's war memorial is in its lychgate on Town Lane. Beyond it is the Idle Rec, with football pitches, tennis courts, a bowling green and a play area. Longlands itself is a lit, tarmac residential street a couple of hundred metres long. For a house on a slope like Town Well Cottages, say which door is at street level when you book.
How the van gets to Longlands
The way in is High Street, which leads down into the village from Highfield Road and is crossed by New Street where the old railway bridge was. Longlands leaves High Street at its southern end and heads north towards the church. Holy Trinity faces Town Lane, and a listed K6 telephone kiosk stands where Town Lane meets Westfield Lane, a handy marker when describing the approach.

Yes, close by. Idle station stood just south of the bridge that carried the line over High Street at the New Street junction, next to the Oddfellows Hall of 1840. Passenger trains stopped in 1931, and Idlecroft Road now follows the old route south towards Eccleshill.
