Thornthwaite: what to know before moving day
The village gathers round St Saviour's Church, built in 1810 with a porch and bellcote added around 1893, and the houses beside it: Church House and Church Gate, both mid-18th century, and Chestnut Grove. Down by the beck is Thornwaite Mill, a former corn mill with its mill house. All are gritstone, like every one of the parish's twelve listed buildings.
Padside Beck is crossed by a packhorse bridge thought to date from the 15th century, probably on the route from Ilkley to Fountains Abbey and now a scheduled monument. The hamlet of Padside, a mile west, has Padside Hall of the late 16th or early 17th century. Thornthwaite Scout Centre and camp site, run by Harrogate and Nidderdale Scout District, is near the village.
How the van gets to Thornthwaite
From the A59 the route data comes up Meagill Lane and Hardisty Hill, runs along Greenhow Hill Road, then takes My Love Lane and Nought Moor Road down into the village. Thornthwaite Brow is the road climbing out of the valley, and Dacre Pasture Lane leads north.
