Swain House: what to know before moving day
Swain House is a district of avenues. Swain House Crescent and Radcliffe Avenue meet Swain House Road in the middle, and Milligan Avenue, Moser Avenue, Amundsen Avenue, Mirfield Avenue, Howarth Avenue, Greenwood Avenue and Moorhouse Avenue fill the ground around them, with Swain Mount and Sutton Avenue towards the edges. So many avenues side by side is exactly where a house number on the wrong one goes astray, so check the street name twice when you book.
Swain House Primary School is on Radcliffe Avenue, Hanson Academy on Sutton Avenue and Grove House Primary on Myers Lane, all to the south-west, and St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Norman Lane to the north-east. The oldest buildings nearby are about half a kilometre off in two directions: to the west, in Wrose, Bolton Old Hall, a timber-framed hall of 1627 encased in gritstone and listed Grade II*; to the south-east, on Idle Road, Ivy Place, a pair of 18th-century houses. James Magennis, awarded the Victoria Cross in the Second World War, moved to Swain House in the 1960s.
How the van gets to Swain House
From the city, come north on Idle Road or Kings Road. Kings Road, a 40 mph road on its northern stretch, meets Swain House Road at the western end of the area. Idle Road leads to the Five Lane Ends roundabout, where Swain House Road begins at the eastern end. Either way, name the avenue off Swain House Road that you live on.
