Five Lane Ends: what to know before moving day
Despite the name, six roads now meet at the roundabout: Idle Road from the south, Swain House Road from the south-west, Wrose Road from the west, Highfield Road and Bradford Road from the north, and Norman Lane to the east. Most addresses here are easiest to find by naming the road you leave the roundabout on. The Lane Ends pub on Norman Lane and the post office are right at the junction, and The Highfield and the Balloon & Basket are a few hundred metres up Highfield Road.
Enterprise 5, to the north-east off Bradford Road, has the Morrisons and a row of shops, and Eccleshill Police Station is on Javelin Close next to it. Blakehill Primary School is on Highfield Road, and Hanson Academy, between Bolton and Five Lane Ends, is on Sutton Avenue. The streets immediately around the junction include the Norman group, Norman Avenue, Norman Crescent and Norman Grove, and the Acre group of Acre Avenue, Acre Drive and Acre Lane on the Eccleshill side.
How the van gets to Five Lane Ends
From the city centre, Idle Road comes north through Bolton straight to the roundabout. From Shipley, Wrose Road runs east from Gaisby Lane. From Eccleshill, Norman Lane is the direct link, and from the Idle direction, Highfield Road and Bradford Road come in from the north. OpenStreetMap marks Norman Avenue as unsuitable for heavy goods traffic.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 10 to 20 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
