Rothwell Haigh: what to know before moving day
Haigh Road is the local spine, with a cluster of streets taking its name: Haighside Drive, Haigh Gardens, Haigh View and Haigh Avenue. Wood Lane runs past Wood Crescent, Wood Hill and Wood Mount; it is also the road that has had parking trouble since Leeds Valley Park opened, so if you live on it, tell us where the van can stand. St George's Hospital once stood off Wood Lane, where Castle Lodge Avenue and its houses are now, and a whale jawbone arch has marked the junction of Wood Lane and the A61 for more than a century.
Coal shaped this side of Rothwell. Rothwell Haigh Colliery closed on 9 December 1983 and most of its 650 men moved to the Selby coalfield; the old coking plant land was later sold for housing. The ruins of Rothwell Castle, the Haigh Road Community Centre, the school on Haigh Road and Rothwell Pastures are good landmarks to give the driver.
How the van gets to Rothwell Haigh
From Bradford the van can take the M62 east and the M1 north to junction 44, which is at Rothwell Haigh, where the M1 meets the A639. Leeds Road, the A639, then brings the van into the area, and Haigh Road and Wood Lane lead off it. The B6481, the old line of the A639, runs from there to Stourton.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 30 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
