John o' Gaunts: what to know before moving day
The area shares its name with John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, who owned the royal lodge at Rothwell and is said to have killed the last wild boar in England nearby; a boar's head was on the arms of the old Rothwell council. The streets are easy to navigate once you know the system: a grid of numbered roads from First Avenue to Eighth Avenue, plus Temple Avenue and Temple Green, and names such as De Lacies Road, Mowbray Chase and Blayds Garth. Say which Avenue when you book; the numbers are easy to mix up on a phone call.
Rothwell Country Park, made from 1995 on the old colliery land, has a sculpture trail and a pond trail, and Springhead Park, home of the Rothwell Carnival and a Saturday parkrun, is close by. John O'Gaunts Recreation Ground by Rothwell Labour Club is where Rothwell Town JFC play. The Rose Lund Community Centre and Rothwell Cemetery are other places a driver can find.
How the van gets to John o' Gaunts
From Bradford the van can take the M62 and the M1 to junction 44 and then the A639, Leeds Road, which runs along one side of the area. Holmsley Lane and Styebank Lane lead into the numbered avenues, and Springhead Road and Park Lane link through to the middle of Rothwell.
