Newall: what to know before moving day
Much of Newall was built by the town council. From 1920 Otley put up 214 council houses here by the end of 1922, then more east of Newall Carr Road in The Crescent and The Crossways, and after 1947 along Weston Lane to the west. Private building filled in from the 1920s onwards, with a development around Newall Hall, an 18th-century house now flats, in the 1980s. Newall Old Hall, painted by Turner, was demolished in 1928 for council housing.
Wharfedale Park is the housing made from the old Wharfedale General Hospital on Newall Carr Road, including listed buildings of the 1873 workhouse, while the new Wharfedale Hospital stands just to the west. Prince Henry's Grammar School and the Yew Tree pub, itself Grade II listed, are on the same road, and Wharfemeadows Park runs along the river.
How the van gets to Newall
Newall Carr Road, a 30 mph road, is the spine, running north from Billams Hill, and Weston Lane branches west from it. Farnley Lane and Bridge Street, both the B6451, lead back to Otley Bridge. From Bradford the A6038 brings the van into Otley, and the bridge takes it over to Newall.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 30 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

When did Newall become part of Otley?
In 1903 it was transferred to the civil parish and urban district of Otley, and it has stayed part of the town. The old name lives on in Newall with Clifton, a parish now in North Yorkshire.
We are moving into a Wharfedale Park flat. Anything to check?
Many of the flats are conversions of the listed 1873 workhouse buildings. Ask which entrance to use, check the stair width, and tell us the floor when you book.
