Micklefield: what to know before moving day
Micklefield is a village of two halves joined by the Great North Road, the old A1, with an S-bend through fields between them. New Micklefield, to the south, has the station, the industrial park, a landfill site and allotments, terraced cottages built for miners in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, pre-war semis, the Garden Village estate and newer flats beside Pit Lane.
Old Micklefield, to the north, has St Mary the Virgin church, the primary academy, the Blands Arms, shops and the doctors' surgery, and the Churchville estate of 1950s semis, bungalows and terraces. Since 2019 new estates by Strata, Barratt (Drovers Court) and Persimmon have been filling the land between the Great North Road and the motorway. The Peckfield pit explosion of 30 April 1896 killed 63 men and boys, and plaques in the school, church and pub remember them.
How the van gets to Micklefield
The A1(M) passes the village, the M1 meets it near Aberford, and the A656 Roman Ridge Road runs to the west. On the Garforth and Micklefield parish boundary the A63 has a roundabout with the A656. Inside the village, Church Lane leaves the Great North Road for Churchville, Hallfield and St Helens Drive.
