Cul-de-sacs, commuter car parks and an early start
The commuter estates are where the time goes. Ninelands Lane and Barley Hill Road are laid out as narrow closes with small turning heads and cars parked both sides, and at half past eight on a weekday every drive is in use and the road is full. Either we come before that or we come after it. A student load is not heavy, but a Transit LWB still needs somewhere to stand and somewhere to turn round afterwards.
Main Street is the other pinch. It is the shopping spine and the through route at the same time, with bus stops, loading restrictions and constant kerbside movement, so there is very little room to hold a van. The free car parks at Main Street and at the station fill with commuters from early on a weekday. For an address at the Lidgett Lane end that usually means a Sunday, or a start before the York-line trains do.
What Garforth student removals usually involves
- Main Street has time-limited and loading-only bays with double yellows at the junctions, so centre jobs are timed rather than chanced
- Some of the retail car parks in town have height barriers a Transit LWB will not clear, so collections come off the surface roads
- Estate roads off Ninelands Lane and Barley Hill Road are on-street with driveways taking most of the frontage, so the stopping point gets agreed in advance
- SLP College in the town is a specialist performing arts college rather than a university, so there is no student housing belt here to move within
- M1 Junctions 46 and 47 and the A63 through town both queue at peak, which is why the long runs out leave early

Frequently asked questions: student removals in Garforth
Is there a university in Garforth?
No. Garforth Academy is the large secondary and SLP College is a specialist performing arts college. Anyone doing a degree commutes into Leeds from Garforth or East Garforth station, or moves away for it. Our work here is the September run out, the June run home, and moves between house shares.
Can you do a long run to Sheffield or Newcastle in one trip?
Yes, and it is what the van is for. A full student room fits a Transit LWB with room to spare, so it goes as one load with a driver who carries at both ends. Long runs need booking in advance so the day can be set aside, and the price is fixed before we start.
The close is too narrow for a van. What happens then?
We stop at the widest point we can reach safely, usually the mouth of the close, and barrow in with a trolley. Blankets and straps come as standard so nothing gets dragged. If you tell us the street when you book, we will have looked at the turning head before we arrive.
