Lydgate (Holmfirth): what to know before moving day
Lydgate Unitarian Chapel gives the place its centre. The chapel dates from 1695 and was remodelled in 1768; beside it are the Jacobean-style Lydgate Parsonage of 1842 and the Oliver Heywood Memorial Sunday School of 1910, a flat-roofed, bow-fronted Arts and Crafts building by Edgar Wood and James Henry Sellers. All three are Grade II listed, and the chapel stands right by the A635, so any stop outside the older buildings here is a stop on a main road.
Most homes are on the streets around the chapel: Moorcroft Drive, Moorcroft Park Drive, Lydgate Drive, Lydgate Close, Bramley Close, Lingwood Close and Kirklands, with Kirkbridge Lane and Holme Lane as the older lanes. Lydgate Close, Lingwood Close and Kirklands are cul-de-sacs, so say whether the van can come to the door or should wait at the end. Further out, Hollingreave is a listed row of seven stone cottages, some of three storeys, and Stoney Bank Lane leads to Stoney Bank Cottage of the 17th or early 18th century. New Mill Junior School is about 100 yards from the chapel.
How the van gets to Lydgate (Holmfirth)
The A635 Holmfirth Road is the road through Lydgate. A little further east it reaches New Mill, where the A616 crosses it on its way between Huddersfield and Sheffield, and to the west it runs on to Holmfirth. From Bradford the van comes by way of Huddersfield and the A616 through Brockholes and Thongsbridge.
