Thurstonland: what to know before moving day
A lot of Thurstonland's homes were farm buildings first. Upper Fold Farmhouse, from the 17th century, is now three dwellings, one of its barns has been converted into a house, and a small cruck-framed barn of probably the 16th century has been taken into the house beside it. Low Fold Farm and 10 The Village are likewise one old farmhouse divided into three. In a converted farmhouse or barn, measure the doorways and stairs before the day and send the figures with your list.
The main street is simply called The Village, where No. 72 is a three-storey former weaver's house. The School House of 1766 to 1767, 4 Top of the Hill of 1753 and the cottage row at 84 to 92 Town Moor are also listed. The Rose and Crown is at the southern edge, and the church, the first school and the cricket club, with its wooden pavilion of 1910, are grouped at the northern end. There are small dairy farms in and around the village.
How the van gets to Thurstonland
Being on a hilltop, every way in climbs. Thurstonland Bank Road and Town Moor are the roads up to The Village, and Haw Cliff Lane, Marsh Hall Lane and Halstead Lane lead away from the village. The nearest main road is the A616 through Brockholes, reached from Bradford by way of Huddersfield. The Penistone Line runs beneath the village in the mile-long Thurstonland Tunnel.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
