Hopton: what to know before moving day
Hopton meets the town at the river. Ledgard Bridge, built in 1799 to 1800 with four semicircular stone arches, carries the road over the Calder. Close by, the flood lock at Newgate Bridge, from about 1776, is where boats leave the river for the Calder and Hebble Navigation, and its former lock-keeper's cottage still stands next to it. The Manchester and Leeds Railway's stone bridge over the river, from around 1840, is listed as well.
The name is an old one: Mirfield Free Grammar was founded in 1667 by Richard Thorpe of Hopton. Hopton Primary School is on Woodend Road and there are allotments along Hopton New Road. Homes range from the river streets to closes such as Wheatley Drive and Southbrook Gardens, while Hopton Hall, a 16th-century house, marks the upper end of the area.
How the van gets to Hopton
