High Harrogate: what to know before moving day
The Stray ends here, and the terraced houses that line it are the heart of the area. Park Parade and Regent Parade are rows of early and mid 19th-century gritstone houses, many of them listed, often three storeys over a basement, with shops mixed in on Regent Parade. Church Square, which the Stray encloses, is early 19th-century terraces and pairs round Christ Church, built in 1831 as Harrogate's first church. A few buildings have had new lives as homes: the former St Luke's Church became dwellings in 1983, and Mansfield House, a theatre of 1788, is now three houses.
The shops and cafes are on Westmoreland Street and the A59 Skipton Road, and two of the 17th-century inns, the Granby and the Dragon, share their names with Granby Road and Dragon Road; the Stray's north-east tip is at The Granby. Harrogate District Hospital on Lancaster Park Road is on this side of town, and Granby Meadows is a Redrow housing development. With a basement or a third floor, give the number of flights when you book.
How the van gets to High Harrogate
From Bradford the A658 comes round the south of Harrogate as the bypass and joins the A59 to the east; the A59 then runs in as Knaresborough Road and Skipton Road, and the A661 Wetherby Road also comes in on this side of town. The Empress Roundabout is a handy named landmark when you give directions.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 45 to 55 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
