Hellifield: what to know before moving day
Before the railways Hellifield was little more than a hamlet. The Midland Railway's station of 1880, a Grade II listed building with an island platform reached by an underground passage, made it a junction between the Settle to Carlisle line and the line from Blackburn, with a locomotive depot and a large goods yard. The houses and streets built for that workforce, and newer homes put up on the old railway land and the former auction mart site, make up much of the village today.
Main Road carries the A65 through the centre, and Station Road leads to the station. The Methodist Church on Haw Grove opened in 1893 and part of it is now the Wesley Centre, while St Aidan's Church dates from 1906. Older buildings stand apart from the railway streets: Hellifield Peel, a Grade II* tower house of 14th century origin, and the four homes at 1 to 4 Hellifield Green. Since 2014 the parish has also included Nappa and Swinden.
How the van gets to Hellifield
Skipton first, by the A650 and A629 from Bradford, then the A65 north-west through Gargrave. The A65 enters Hellifield as Main Road, meets Malham Road at a milestone of 1733 and leaves north-west as Kendal Road. The A682 turns off south towards Nappa. A bypass for Hellifield and Long Preston has been discussed since the Second World War and never built. Hellifield is roughly 45 to 60 minutes from Bradford, by estimate.
