Moving in Gate Foot: what to know first
Gate Foot is one short lane of semis, a small terrace and a couple of detached houses, with Marsh House, Marshlands and Syke Bottom close by. Gate Foot Lane links Horn Lane at Snowgate Head with the foot of Marsh Lane and carries on as Wall Nook Lane towards Haddingley, so the van can come in from either end. With its single-lane stretches, say which end your house is nearer and where the van can pull in.
Marsh Lane, the short link up to the A635, is a 60 mph lane, and Penistone Road at the top is 50 mph and unlit east of the junction, so neither is a place to load. The van stands in the lane outside the house or in your drive. Hirst Lane and Deershaw Lane are tracks and The Gully is a footpath, so a house reached only by one of those means a carry from the made lane; tell us the distance.
Gate Foot: the local picture
This is old boundary country. Where Marsh Lane leaves Penistone Road, two listed stone posts of the mid 19th century stand on either side, each cut with a line and the names of Fulstone and Shepley, the two old townships that met here. About 400 metres west, a cast-iron milepost opposite the Toss o'Coin names the Greenfield and Shepley Lane Head road. The homes are scattered and mostly go by house or farm names, so give the name as well as the lane.
Several of the lanes round Gate Foot are not for vans. Hirst Lane is a compacted track, Deershaw Lane is a track, and The Gully is a gravel public footpath only about a metre wide. Gate Foot Lane narrows to a single lane in places. The Kirklees Way and the Holme Valley Circular Walk both pass close by, and Wall Nook Lane carries on east to Haddingley.
How the van gets to Gate Foot
Marsh Lane, signed at 60 mph, is the turning off the A635 at Marsh Lane Top, where there are bus stops on both sides. Gate Foot Lane leaves it after about 200 metres. From Bradford the van comes south from Huddersfield on the A629 to Shepley Lane Head, then takes Cross Lane and the A635 west, roughly 40 to 50 minutes in all.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Gate Foot
Gate Foot has an HD8 postcode but the parish is Holme Valley. Which should I give?
Give the HD8 postcode with the house or farm name. Postcode districts and parish lines do not match here: Gate Foot sits in the Holme Valley parish and Holme Valley South ward, but its mail comes through HD8, the same district as Shepley.
Are Gate Foot and Snowgate Head one place?
They are neighbours. Gate Foot is the hamlet on Gate Foot Lane and Wall Nook Lane, a little east of Snowgate Head, and address searches sometimes group the two. The HD8 postcode on your post is the safest guide.
Are there buses near Gate Foot if I am travelling separately?
Yes. Buses stop on the A635 at Marsh Lane Top, a short walk from Gate Foot Lane, including the X1 between Holmfirth and Wakefield and the D2 and D3 between Denby Dale and Huddersfield.
