Edgerton: what to know before moving day
Edgerton grew from the early 19th century, when three large Georgian houses were built; one of them, Edgerton Hill, is now the Ukrainian Club. It became the place for many of the town's largest houses, and a long list of them is listed: mid-19th-century villas on Kaffir Road, Lunnaclough Hall of 1855, Stoneleigh on Bryan Road of 1860, and Banney Royd and Rose Hill, both with work by the architect Edgar Wood. Edgerton Cemetery, the town's principal cemetery, is here too.
Many of these villas keep their listed stone gate piers at the drive, on Kaffir Road, Halifax Road and Bryan Road. Measure the gap between the piers and note the slope of the drive before the day: that decides whether the van goes up the drive or waits on the road while things are carried. Some houses are divided, 4A and 4B Halifax Road for example, so give the full address.
How the van gets to Edgerton
The A629 is Edgerton's road: from the ring road it runs out as Edgerton Road and carries on as Halifax Road towards Lindley and the M62 at junction 24. Thornhill Road links it south to the A640 at Marsh, and Birkby Hall Road and Bryan Road lead in from the Birkby side.
