Oakes: what to know before moving day
Two big mill buildings show what Oakes grew around. Wellington Mills has a listed mid-19th-century front tower with cast iron cresting and a tall five-storey block, and the early 19th-century centre block of Acre Mills, also listed, now holds Huddersfield Royal Infirmary outpatient clinics off Acre Street. Oakes Baptist Church of 1867 to 1868, with cast iron gates on Oakes Road, and Oakes School of 1873 are listed too.
Around them are older streets such as Baker Street, Union Street and Wellington Street, and later avenues off Oakes Road South and Plover Road. At 7 Oakes Road South an 18th-century farmhouse and barn share one range, from before the mills. There are allotments off Plover Road and Occupation Road, and Low Hills Pond is a small green space. How the van gets to Oakes
The A640 New Hey Road is the main road through Oakes: east it runs through Marsh to the ring road, and west it passes Salendine Nook on the way to junction 23 of the M62 at Outlane. Oakes Road leaves it for Quarmby, and Acre Street meets it at the New Hey roundabout.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 25 to 40 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Is the Royal Infirmary in Oakes?
The main Huddersfield Royal Infirmary is in Lindley, right beside Oakes, and some outpatient clinics are in the converted Acre Mills on Acre Street. If your new home is on Acre Street or near the hospital, give the house number so the van heads for your door and not a hospital entrance.
