East Marton: what to know before moving day
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs through the middle of the village, and its towpath here is part of the Pennine Way. The Double Arched Bridge of about 1790 carries the A59 over the water: one arch sits above the other, and Historic England's listing treats the lower one as a strainer arch built at the same time. Several more listed canal bridges cross nearby, among them Williamson Bridge and Langber Bridge.
Away from the main road, homes are reached from Church Lane, Heber Drive and Ingthorpe Lane. St Peter's Church, Norman in origin, stands on Church Lane, and navvies who died of smallpox while digging the canal are buried in its churchyard. The Cross Keys, a listed stone inn, and farmhouses such as Sawley House, Box Tree Cottage and Tempest Farmhouse show the building type: stone walls, stone slate roofs and 17th or 18th century doorways. A television mast stands just north of the village.
How the van gets to East Marton
The A59 is the only main road. The van reaches Skipton up the A650 and A629 from Bradford, joins the bypass west of the town and follows the A59 past Broughton to the canal crossing. Because those were other names for the ancient parish of East Marton. Today it forms the civil parish of Martons Both together with West Marton, in the Skipton West & West Craven ward of North Yorkshire Council.
