Chellow Heights: what to know before moving day
The waterworks came first. Chellow Heights was chosen because, at that height, water arriving through the Nidd Aqueduct could run on to most of Bradford without an expensive pumping station. The land was given by the Hodgson family in 1895, two storage reservoirs opened in 1900, and a treatment plant covering 44 acres was added in the 1960s. The works still fill the ground south of Haworth Road, beside the golf course.
The housing is built round two families of street names. North of Haworth Road are Brantwood Road, Brantwood Drive, Brantwood Crescent, Brantwood Oval and Brantdale Road; the Thorn streets, Thorn Lane, Thorn Avenue, Thorn Drive and Thorn Grove, are close by. With so many near-identical names, the full street and house number stop the van ending up one road over.
Haworth Road has the shops and services: a Tesco Express, a Morrisons Daily, the Haworth Road Health Centre and Haworth Road Library. It is also a school run. Beckfoot Upper Heaton, Belle Vue Girls' Academy, Chellow Heights Special School and Beckfoot Heaton Primary are all mapped close together, so an early-morning or mid-afternoon load on these streets needs some thought about timing.
How the van gets to Chellow Heights
The B6144 is the way from the city: Toller Lane leads out of Bradford and becomes Haworth Road, which runs through Chellow Heights as a 30 mph road and then as 40 mph towards the Sandy Lane side. Stoney Ridge Road leaves the area to the north-east towards Nab Wood and Cottingley Cliffe Road.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 10 to 25 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
