Allerton Bywater: what to know before moving day

The old centre is the junction of Leeds Road, Station Road and Main Street, where St Mary the Less, the war memorial and the butcher's stand together. Main Street leads towards the river, with Boat Lane off it to the Boat Inn, and the Victoria Hotel and the Anchor are close. An 1893 map shows the Robinson brothers' pottery between the Aire and the north end of Main Street. Homes near the river were flooded in November 2000 and again in June 2007.

Allerton Bywater Colliery worked from 1875 until 1992, and 1,060 jobs went when it closed. The Millennium Village scheme was planned for 520 homes, and a newer layout of streets now carries the names of birds, such as Fieldfare Drive, Lapwing Close and Siskin Way, and of engineers, such as Trevithick Road, Watt Avenue and Davy Road. OpenStreetMap maps many of these as living streets, shared by people on foot and cars, so the van moves at walking pace there.

How the van gets to Allerton Bywater

Leeds Road is the main way in, coming from Woodend and Great Preston, and Station Road carries on from the centre. Park Lane links Leeds Road with The Lines Way, the bridleway on the old railway to Garforth. From Bradford the motorway part of the run is the M62 and the M1, then the A642 through Garforth and the lanes south through Great Preston, roughly 40 to 50 minutes in all.
