Methley: what to know before moving day

Methley has two middles. People now describe the village by Church Lane, Main Street and Pinfold Lane, but those streets are mostly 20th-century. The first village grew around St Oswald's Church, a 12th-century Grade I building, and along Church Side, where 17th and 18th-century buildings still stand, as they do on parts of Watergate. Church Side is also the A639, so the oldest part of Methley lines a main road, with the Boundary House pub and the cricket and bowls clubs beside it.

This was a coal village with five pits; the last, Savile Colliery, shut in the mid-1980s. Where Watergate meets the Leeds to Pontefract road stands the Fatty Cake School House, a Grade II schoolhouse of 1637 that is now a private home. Newer streets such as Pinders Green Drive, Parsley Drive and Longbow Avenue fill the ground between the old centre and Mickletown.

How the van gets to Methley

From Bradford the M62 runs east past the M1 at Lofthouse to junction 30, where the A642 heads north to Oulton. The A639, the Leeds to Pontefract road, crosses the A642 in Oulton and comes into Methley along Methley Lane and Leeds Road before becoming Church Side; beyond the village, as Barnsdale Road, it crosses the Calder on Methley Bridge about a mile to the south-east. The B6135 runs through as Watergate and Newmarket Lane.

The drive from Bradford is roughly 30 to 45 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Methley: questions before you book

Part of Methley went to Wakefield. Which side is my address on?

In the 1990s the land south and west of the M62, including the hamlets of Newmarket and Scholey Hill, passed to the Wakefield district. The village north of the motorway, around Church Side, Main Street and Mickletown, is still in Leeds and the Kippax and Methley ward.

Is there still a railway station at Methley?

No. There were three: Methley North closed in 1957, Methley Junction in 1943 and Methley South in 1960. Trains still run through on the old North Midland line, but none stop in the village, so the move is planned by road.
