Great Preston: what to know before moving day
The middle of the village is Great Preston Corner, where Preston Lane, Berry Lane and Whitehouse Lane meet by The New Inn, its one pub. Whitehouse Avenue, Whitehouse Crescent, St Aidans Road, Church Road and Well Close lead off. St Aidan's church closed in 1992 and became a community centre in 1998, the working men's club has become a snooker club, and the Church of England primary school is a Victorian building with a modern extension.
The village once had a station on its doorstep. Kippax station stood on the western edge of Kippax next to what was then the hamlet of Great Preston, and in 1880 its water tower supplied fresh water to local people after outbreaks of fever. Passenger trains stopped in 1951 and the trackbed is now a cycleway. Townclose Hills and Hollinhurst Wood, both Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserves, are close to the houses.
How the van gets to Great Preston
Preston Lane is the through road: one way it meets Brigshaw Lane towards Kippax, the other it runs down to Woodend and Allerton Bywater. Berry Lane leaves the corner for Station Road and the old line. Garforth, about 2 miles north, is where the A642 and junction 47 of the M1 are.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
