Windhill: what to know before moving day
Windhill was part of Idle until 1894, when it joined the Shipley Urban District, and the crags of Wrose and Windhill shelter Shipley on its eastern side. The linguist Joseph Wright grew up here and wrote A Grammar of the Dialect of Windhill, published in 1893. Leeds Road was once the Shipley and Bramley Turnpike, with a toll gate at Windhill Bar, and the Shipley and Windhill railway station stood on the north side of Leeds Road from 1875 to 1931; its building survived and was later used by businesses. The former school at 15 Leeds Road, with the master's house built into it, is listed.
Around the point where Owlet Road meets Prospect Avenue there is a whole family of Prospect streets: Prospect Street, Prospect Grove, Prospect Walk, Prospect Mount and Prospect Close. Rosebery Avenue, Kitson Street, Marion Drive and Pratt Lane are nearby, so give the driver the exact one. Christ Church Primary Academy and High Crags Primary Leadership Academy are both in the district, and the Arndale Shopping Centre in Shipley town centre is a short drive west.
How the van gets to Windhill
From Bradford, Canal Road, the A6037, becomes Valley Road into Shipley; Leeds Road, the A657, heads east from the town centre past Windhill. Crag Road, the B6149, runs from Briggate through the district, with Owlet Road leading south off it towards Owlet and Carr Lane heading towards Wrose Road. Several streets in the Shipley centre side are one-way on OpenStreetMap, including Kirkgate and Market Street.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 10 to 25 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
