Whinmoor: what to know before moving day
The council's early 1960s plan was for 5,000 homes, a small shopping centre and other amenities, with a pedestrian link to Seacroft. Much of the former council housing is now privately owned. The streets come in named groups: the Naburn roads, the White Laithe roads, the Birchfields closes and Sherburn Road, with Whinmoor Way running through. White Laith Primary School and Grimes Dyke Primary School are among the schools, and the Grimes Dyke stream crosses the area.
Whinmoor had seven high-rise blocks, built in 1966; Langbar Towers, beside a shopping parade, was the first finished. Six came down in 2006. Sherburn Court, the one that was kept, got a new roof, new windows and new lifts. On the western side, Coal Road runs past the Unilever site and the Seacroft Industrial Estate, and newer houses have been built off York Road and on the old Unilever car park.
North of the estate is Whinmoor Fields, the northern part of the East Leeds Extension, where the plans for east Leeds put a large share of their new homes, served by the East Leeds Orbital Route. If you are moving into a street that has only just been named, send the plot number and the builder's site entrance as well as the postcode.
How the van gets to Whinmoor
York Road, the A64, runs along the south of Whinmoor, and the B6902, which was the A6120 ring road until 2022, runs through the middle between Coal Road and the Naburn streets. Sherburn Road passes under York Road through an underpass. The new A6120 is on the northern edge, named Ring Road Whinmoor and Ring Road Whinmoor Fields on the map.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 30 to 45 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
