Moving in Stapleton: what to know first
Stapleton has no village street. Bank Wood Road, New Road, Scrombeck Farm, the Dovecote Park business site and a ring of woods make up the place, and the homes are scattered among them, including the converted courtyard of Old Stable Court. New Road is a two-lane road at the national 60 limit, so the van pulls fully off it rather than loading from the carriageway.
Old Stable Court is a listed magnesian limestone building of about 1762, so expect old doorways and turns in the stairs; measure the widest pieces against them before moving day.
Stapleton: the local picture
Much of the parish was Stapleton Park. Edward Lascelles bought the manor in 1762 and had John Carr design a new house, with a park laid out by Richard Woods; Capability Brown was brought in in 1782. The house was partly taken down in 1921 and later demolished, and the estate was sold in 1958 and mostly farmed. The coach house and stables survive as Old Stable Court, a magnesian limestone courtyard of about 1762 with a clock cupola, listed Grade II*.
Since 1921 Stapleton has also been home to the Brotherhood Church's colony, a Christian anarchist and pacifist community on a seven-and-a-half-acre smallholding that grows much of its own food. Around them are Bank Wood Road, the Dovecote Park business site, the Mid Yorkshire Golf Club, Darrington Quarry and a string of woods: Wake Wood, Mill Wood, Rows Wood and Fishpond Wood.
How the van gets to Stapleton
Bank Wood Road is the road the van uses. The van's route from Bradford is likely to be the M62 east to the A162, then Valley Road and Bank Wood Road, taking roughly 40 to 50 minutes by our reckoning. New Road, a 60 mph lane, is the one nearer the village.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 50 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Stapleton
Old Stable Court is on the address. Is that the old hall?
Not the hall itself, which was demolished in the 20th century, but its coach house and stables, built around 1762 around a square courtyard. The building is listed Grade II*, so tell us which range of the courtyard your home is in when you book.
Is this the Stapleton on the River Tees?
No. That Stapleton is a village and parish on the Tees in the old North Riding. This one is a hamlet south-east of Pontefract with WF8 postcodes such as WF8 3DB, so the postcode keeps the two apart.
Is the Brotherhood Church community at Stapleton a usual address?
Yes, it is a home. The Brotherhood Church has lived at Stapleton since 1921 on a smallholding of about seven and a half acres, so give the name and postcode as for any other house.
