Moving in Southfield: what to know first
Southfield is a crossroads hamlet, with Southfield Lane and Smith Lane meeting at the Shooters Arms and a surface car park nearby. Barkerhouse Road, lit and with pavements at its town end, is the made-up road down into Nelson, while Delves Lane and the lanes around the hamlet are minor roads. The listed stone cottages and farmhouse stand in a group south-west of the crossroads, so name the building when you book.
Crawshaw Lane, off Southfield Lane, is partly a dirt track, and the houses on Deerstone Road and Linkside Avenue towards Nelson are on ordinary residential streets where the van can stop outside. For one of the lane houses, say whether the van can pull off the road while it loads, as the lanes here have no verges marked for parking.
Southfield: the local picture
Southfield's old core is a group of listed stone buildings about 400 metres south-west of the crossroads. Southfield Fold Farmhouse, early 17th century, has an L-shaped plan and a vaulted cellar. Southfield Cottages are a row of four former weavers' cottages, three of them three storeys high, and Southfield House has been divided into three dwellings. A tall, narrow cottage often means a winding stair, so measure it before booking a large bed or sofa.
The most unusual building is a barn of 1797 with Venetian windows, part of which became a Methodist chapel around 1800; a plaque records John Wesley preaching there in 1786. Marsden Park golf course, an 18-hole municipal course opened in 1968, lies beside the hamlet with its address on Townhouse Road, and Delves Lane and Barkerhouse Road lead down into the Nelson streets around Deerstone Road.
How the van gets to Southfield
The van arrives on Southfield Lane. On the suggested route from Bradford it crosses the moor road through Haworth to Laneshaw Bridge, passes through Colne and drops by Colne Lane, Waterside Road and Lenches Road to the lane. From the Nelson side, Barkerhouse Road links it with the town. Expect roughly 50 to 60 minutes from Bradford to the Shooters Arms crossroads, as an estimate.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 50 to 60 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Southfield
Is the Southfield Methodist chapel really an old barn?
Partly. The listed building is a stone barn of 1797, and part of it was turned into a Methodist chapel around 1800. A plaque on it records that John Wesley preached there in 1786.
Why do some Southfield addresses end in Burnley?

Which road should I give for the van to reach Southfield?
Southfield Lane, where the Shooters Arms stands at the crossroads with Smith Lane. From Nelson the van comes up Barkerhouse Road to it, and from Colne it comes along Lenches Road.
