Moving in Catlow: what to know first
Catlow is a few stone buildings, and the lanes decide how a move goes. Southfield Lane is tarmac for most of its length but laid with setts on one stretch, Smith Lane is tarmac, Robin House Lane drops downhill on setts to a ford, and Crawshaw Lane is paved near the road and a dirt track beyond. The van comes in on Southfield Lane or Smith Lane and loads in a yard or gateway, so tell us which side of the hamlet your entrance is on.
Catlow: the local picture
The hamlet is a handful of stone buildings, and two of them are listed. Catlow Fold Farm and Catlow Hall, probably of 1666, is a partly pebbledashed house with three gables and a round-headed doorway; Catlow House, from the late 18th century, has a symmetrical front and a moulded pediment over the door. Down in the valley a former packhorse bridge, possibly 17th century, still carries walkers over Catlow Brook.
Catlow Brook comes down from the Coldwell Reservoirs near Boulsworth Hill and feeds Walverden Reservoir, the start of Walverden Water. The lanes around the hamlet are narrow country roads. Robin House Lane has a ford and setts, and Crawshaw Lane, leaving Southfield Lane here, is a byway open to all traffic rather than a made road. For a house on one of these, send a photo of the gateway so the van can be placed before anything is carried.
How the van gets to Catlow
Southfield Lane is the way in. The suggested route from Bradford comes over the moor road past Haworth to Laneshaw Bridge, into Colne, and down Colne Lane, Waterside Road and Lenches Road before joining Southfield Lane south to Catlow. Bradford to the hamlet is roughly 50 to 60 minutes by our estimate, with the last stretch on narrow lanes.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 50 to 60 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Catlow
Can the van use Robin House Lane or Crawshaw Lane?
It depends on the conditions. Robin House Lane has a ford and setts, and Crawshaw Lane is an unmade byway, so the normal approach is Southfield Lane. Tell us which lane your gate is on and we plan the stop from there.
Which council covers a BB10 address in Catlow?
Pendle Borough Council. BB10 also reaches into Burnley, taking in Briercliffe and Cliviger, but the lookup for BB10 3RN puts Catlow in Nelson parish and the Marsden & Southfield ward, so Nelson Town Council is the parish tier.
Is Southfield Lane surfaced all the way to Catlow?
It is tarmac for most of the way, with one stretch laid in setts. It is the normal way in for the van, unlike Robin House Lane with its ford.
