Sharlston: what to know before moving day
Old Sharlston is the small, older end, on The Green and Grime Lane. Sharlston Hall is a manor house of 15th-century origin, Grade II*, and its dovecote, entrance gateway, forecourt wall and garden gazebo are all listed; 19 The Green is a 17th-century farmhouse. The White Horse is on West Lane, and the Old Sharlston cricket ground, Sharlston Dam and the rugby league ground are all close.
Sharlston Common lies along Weeland Road, the A645, which has the post office, a pharmacy, the community centre and the ground of Sharlston Rovers, the amateur rugby league club. St Luke's parish church and the colliery memorial are nearby, and the estates run off Weeland Road on streets such as Weeland Drive, Jubilee Road, Coronation Road and Woodside Avenue. The Sharlston pub has closed and its building is now a pharmacy, and the old people's home was replaced in 2011 by new homes for rent and sale.
How the van gets to Sharlston
Leaving Wakefield on the A638, the A645 branches off as Weeland Road and runs east through Sharlston Common towards Streethouse and Featherstone. Stay on the A638 instead and, past the Crofton turn, there is a second turn for Sharlston on Windmill Hill. In Old Sharlston itself the roads are West Lane, The Green and Grime Lane.
