Shade: what to know before moving day
Side streets branch off the main road in short runs. OpenStreetMap records Lion Street, Market Street and Shade Street with sett surfaces, and Oak Street, Weir Street, Cannon Street, High Street and Laneside Street are packed in beside them. Along Rochdale Road itself, numbers 195 to 209 are a listed row of eight early 19th-century stone cottages, and Millbrook House, Laneside House and Waterside House form an older listed row from the early 18th century. Setts are bumpy under a trolley, so allow a little longer on those streets.
Dobroyd Road leads off towards Dobroyd Castle, a country house built as a mock castle in 1866 to 1869 and listed Grade II*, with its own lodge of about 1865 at the entrance. Shade Primary School is on the Gauxholme side, and Swineshead Road leads to Swineshead, a 17th-century house later rebuilt and now two homes.
How the van gets to Shade
The A6033 is the spine: it runs south from Todmorden centre through Shade to Gauxholme and Walsden, and the 590 Halifax to Rochdale bus and the T6 Mankinholes circular use it. From Bradford the van comes up the Calder valley on the A646 to Todmorden first, a trip of roughly 50 to 60 minutes.

Is my Rochdale Road address in Shade or Gauxholme?
It depends where on the road you are. The two run into each other, but OpenStreetMap marks Shade to the north, nearer the town centre, and Gauxholme around the Bacup Road junction. Both are OL14 and in the Todmorden West ward, so the house number and postcode settle it.
