Gauxholme: what to know before moving day
The railway defines the place. Gauxholme Viaduct, built in 1840 by the Manchester and Leeds Railway to a design by George Stephenson, carries the line over the Rochdale Canal on 17 stone arches, and Bacup Road passes beneath it by a curving ramped wall. The nearby Gauxholme Railway Bridge of the same year has small stone towers at each end. Four canal locks here, Nos. 21 to 24, date from 1798, and a late 18th-century canal warehouse still stands beside the water.
Houses sit among working mills and yards. Dancroft Mill and Bridge Mill are next to the junction, and Pex Place, built in 1804 as a poorhouse and later a house and works, faces the road with three storeys and an attic. Some streets are very tight: OpenStreetMap records Pexwood Place, a terrace, with a cobbled surface about 2 metres wide, which is too tight to bring a long van down, so the carry would start from Pexwood Road.
How the van gets to Gauxholme
Rochdale Road (the A6033) runs south from Todmorden through Gauxholme towards Walsden, and Bacup Road (the A681), used by the number 7 bus to Rawtenstall, branches off here. From Bradford the van comes up the Calder valley to Todmorden and turns onto Rochdale Road, taking roughly 50 to 65 minutes in all.
