School Green: what to know before moving day
The road called School Green is short, but it holds three listed buildings. Number 41, of about 1830, was built as a school and later became a cottage; 25 to 35 are back-to-back cottages from the early 1800s; and 35A, 37 and 39 were a mid 18th-century farmhouse, converted into two cottages. Further along, 120 to 128 Old Road and 5 to 11 Allerton Lane are listed rows of the 1820s. Back-to-back houses have no rear access, so everything comes and goes through the front door.
Behind the old frontages are School Green Avenue, Chat Hill Road, Heys Avenue, Hoyle Ing Road and the Hughendon streets, plus closes such as Buffham Pastures and Ox Heys Meadows. Oxheys Farmhouse, late 17th century, is a reminder of what was here first. Landmarks for the driver are the School Green Recreation Ground, The Academy at St James, the Esso filling station and the Tesco Express on Thornton Road.
How the van gets to School Green
From Bradford, the B6145 Thornton Road runs straight out to School Green and then on into Thornton. The turn for the old cottages is School Green itself, which links Thornton Road to Allerton Lane and Old Road. Allerton Lane runs north from there up to Allerton, so School Green is also easy to reach from that side. Thornton Road is 30 mph through here.
