Scholes (Leeds): what to know before moving day
The name is a plural of the Old Norse word for a temporary shed. Main Street has the Barley Corn, a Samuel Smith pub, and on Station Road the old railway station, closed with the Cross Gates to Wetherby line in 1964, is now The Buffers pub and restaurant. OpenStreetMap shows the library, the surgery, Scholes (Elmet) Primary School and the playing field in the village, with the Lyndhurst roads, the Elmete streets and Belle Vue Road among the housing.
On Wood Lane, on the Swarcliffe side, Isaac Chippindale started the Scholes Brick and Tile Works in the 1880s, and its bricks built many houses in the area. The kilns were pulled down in the early 1980s, leaving two small fishing lakes that are still called Chippy's Quarry. To the north, the Arthursdale streets lie towards York Road.

Scholes Lane and Station Road bring you into the village, and Rakehill Road heads east to Barwick-in-Elmet. York Road, the A64, passes to the north. On the west side runs the A6120 East Leeds Orbital Route, opened in 2022 and named Ring Road Morwick Green on this stretch, which is the road a van from Bradford arrives on after coming round the Leeds Outer Ring Road.
