Moving in Arthursdale: what to know first
Arthursdale is a small group of houses on quiet, surfaced streets, The Approach, The Avenue, Nook Road and the Arthursdale closes, many with a garage beside the house. With no through traffic the van can usually stop outside or on the drive, so the main thing to tell us is whether the drive is shared and whether a car will be on it on the day.
Be careful with satnav. Rakehill Road looks like a link east to Barwick-in-Elmet, but beyond the Stockheld Lane end it becomes an unsurfaced lane closed to motor vehicles, so the van always comes in from Scholes Lane. Stockheld Lane, at the top of Nook Road, is a public right of way and turns to a track for a short stretch, which makes it a poor way up to York Road with a loaded van.
Arthursdale: the local picture
The layout is simple. The Approach comes in from Rakehill Road and splits: Arthursdale Drive, Arthursdale Grange and Arthursdale Close go one way, and The Avenue, with Nook Gardens off it, the other. Nook Road runs out at the top to meet Stockheld Lane, a public right of way that passes Stockheld Grange Farm, once called Stockhill Farm.
The old Leeds to Wetherby railway, closed in 1964, passes close by as a disused line, and the Rake Beck runs through the fields. Beyond them are Bramley Grange Farm, Whinmoor Nook Wood (Beecrofts Wood on older maps), Langlands Garden Centre and the Leeds Caravan Centre. Just under a kilometre to the south-west is Morwick Hall, an 18th-century house enlarged around 1900, now offices and Grade II listed.
How the van gets to Arthursdale
The way in is from Scholes. Scholes Lane runs north out of the village, and The Approach leaves it at the short surfaced end of Rakehill Road, leading to every Arthursdale street. From the north, Scholes Lane comes down from the A64 York Road. From Bradford the van comes round the Leeds Outer Ring Road and out along York Road, roughly 35 to 45 minutes in all.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 45 minutes. That is an estimate, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.

Frequently asked questions: man with a van in Arthursdale
Is Stockheld Lane suitable for a van, or should it come through Scholes?
Through Scholes. Scholes Lane and The Approach reach every Arthursdale street on ordinary surfaced roads. Stockheld Lane is a public right of way, Barwick 40, and part of it is a track, so it is better kept as a footpath than a way in for a long van.
Can the van drive along Rakehill Road from Arthursdale to Barwick?
No. Only the western end, by The Approach, is surfaced road. Further east Rakehill Road becomes a dirt lane closed to motor vehicles, so for a move between Arthursdale and Barwick-in-Elmet the van goes round by the A64 or through Scholes.
Is Arthursdale part of Scholes?
It sits on the northern edge of Scholes and shares its LS15 postcodes, its parish of Barwick in Elmet and Scholes, and the Harewood ward of Leeds. Give the street and postcode and the address is clear.
