Manston: what to know before moving day
Manston fills the ground between Barwick Road to the north and Austhorpe Road to the south, east of the old Outer Ring Road. The land was part of the Gascoigne family's estate, and plenty of streets carry the Manston name: Manston Crescent, Manston Avenue, Manston Drive and Manston Gardens among them. Manston Park sits in the middle with a crown green bowls club, and the pub on its east side, The Barnbow, used to be The Manston Hotel. The primary schools are Manston St James Primary Academy, Manston Primary and St Theresa's Catholic Primary.
Barnbow, on the eastern side, was a munitions factory in both world wars and is now a scheduled monument. The Barnbow Lasses memorial in Manston Park remembers the workers killed in the explosion of 5 December 1916. East of Manston Lane, OpenStreetMap shows a run of streets named with women's full names, such as Eliza Grant Road and Katie Chapman Drive, and some of that ground is still mapped as a building site. If you are moving into one of those streets, check that the postcode finds the house on a satnav and send it with the booking.
How the van gets to Manston
Manston Lane is the spine, running north from Austhorpe Road up to Barwick Road. From Bradford, the A647 runs east and joins the Leeds Outer Ring Road, which carries on round the north of the city; past Cross Gates its old line is now the B6902, because the new A6120 East Leeds Orbital Route took the number in 2022. Barwick Road and Austhorpe Road both lead east off the ring road into Manston.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 35 to 45 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
