Oakenshaw: what to know before moving day
The centre is easy to describe to a driver. Oakenshaw Cross, a late 18th-century market cross on four circular steps, stands near the junction of Bradford Road and Wyke Lane, and St Andrew's Church (1888-89) is a few steps away. Both are listed. The village shops are along Bradford Road, and 13 Wyke Lane is an early 19th-century listed stone house.
Streets off the centre include Richardson Street, Cross Street, St Andrew's Crescent, Greenside, School Street, North Street, New Street and Mill Carr Hill Road. Woodlands Church of England Primary Academy and Woodlands Country Park are on the edge of the village. Woodlands Cricket Club, founded in 1894, plays on Albert Terrace. Lower Woodlands, just north, has a gritstone farmhouse dated 1614.
How the van gets to Oakenshaw
The M606 passes right beside the village, so the drive from the Bradford ring road at Staygate is short: roughly 15 to 25 minutes is the estimate. Bradford Road and Wyke Lane are the two roads that meet in the centre, and Cliff Hollins Lane meets them in the village. Low Moor station, on the Calder Valley line, is the nearest station, and the Spen Valley Greenway runs past on the old railway line to Cleckheaton.
