Laisterdyke: what to know before moving day
Laisterdyke once had its own station on the Leeds line, closed to passengers in 1966, and a web of junctions controlled by two signal boxes. It also saw Britain's first trolleybus service, which started between Laisterdyke and Dudley Hill in 1911. The rails still run through: OpenStreetMap shows the Leeds and Bradford line and Laisterdyke East junction beside the Dick Lane end of the area.
The oldest housing is stone. Mortimer Row, a terrace of sandstone cottages from about 1830, and Parratt Row are both listed, and so is St Peter's Chaplaincy on Leeds Road. The Lyceum Picture House, opened on Bradford Lane in 1919, later became a bingo and social club. Around Dick Lane the map shows closes such as Spindle Close, Spinners Gate, Fairbairn Fold and Mill Race Lane, and Phoenix Way is a short cul-de-sac off Dick Lane.
Laisterdyke Leadership Academy is on Thornbury Road, the library is off Leeds Road, and Laisterdyke Cricket and Athletic Club has its ground off Sticker Lane. Derby Road Allotments are a useful marker on the northern side.
How the van gets to Laisterdyke
The main roads are the A647 Leeds Road, the A6177 Killinghall Road and Sticker Lane, and the B6381 Barkerend Road and Leeds Old Road. Dick Lane crosses the eastern part of the district, and New Lane links it with the A6177 at Laisterdyke. On a Leeds Road address, a side-street entrance or rear yard makes loading far easier than stopping on the main road.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 10 to 20 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
