Duchy: what to know before moving day
Two kinds of move come up here. One is a whole large detached house, often with a long list of furniture and a drive; the other is a flat inside a big house that has been divided, which means a shared entrance, a shared staircase and neighbours to warn. Tell us which it is, the floor, and whether any part of the drive is shared. Streets on the estate include Duchy Road, Clarence Drive, Kent Road, Cornwall Road, Rutland Road, York Road and Hereford Road, with Oakdale on the edge by the Oakdale golf course and Oak Beck.
St Wilfrid's Church on Duchy Road, designed by Temple Moore and built from 1904, is the only Grade I listed building in Harrogate. Harrogate Ladies' College, a private school founded in 1893, moved to its present site in 1904; its grounds, playing fields and houses now cover about 28 acres of the estate, and houses on both sides of Clarence Drive were taken over as boarding houses. The Valley Gardens, with its New Zealand Garden, is close by.
How the van gets to Duchy
From Bradford the A658 comes past Leeds Bradford Airport to the south of Harrogate, and the A61 runs up into the centre along the Stray. On the estate the van uses roads such as Cornwall Road, Duchy Road, Kent Road and York Road. Clarence Drive has the college's boarding houses, so expect school comings and goings there in term.
The drive from Bradford is roughly 40 to 55 minutes. That is an estimate from route data, not a timed run, and traffic changes it.
