Church Fenton: what to know before moving day
The railway shaped the village. After the Leeds and Selby line arrived in 1839, a brickworks and tileworks followed, and Chicory Row, a terrace of houses, is named after the crop once grown and processed here. The present station opened in 1904 and still has four platforms on the map. Main Street, Station Road, Church Street, Busk Lane and Common Lane are the through roads, with closes such as Sandwath Drive, Northfield Court and Laurels Farm Drive, and Maple Drive's nine houses near the station.
St Mary the Virgin's on Church Street is one of the smallest cruciform churches in England, listed Grade I, and its tower carries aircraft warning lights because of the airfield. The village has a community shop run by volunteers, two pubs (the Fenton Flyer and the White Horse, which villagers bought through a share scheme), and Sunar Bangla in the old station booking office. The studio scenes of the 2016 television series Victoria were filmed in a converted hangar here.
