Ryther: what to know before moving day
Main Street, part of the B1223, is the village street. Late in the 20th century new houses stretched the village south along Mill Lane. The Rythre Arms is the pub, and the village hall stands about 0.3 miles west, near the Selby Diversion of the East Coast Main Line. All Saints' Church, from the 13th century, is at the east end beside Ryther Hall, on the edge of Ryther Ings, with effigies of the de Ryther family who held Ryther Castle here from the 12th to the 16th century.
The Pailbank Drain runs through that east end towards the Wharfe and makes the road turn at right angles away from the river. The land is only 8 to 10 metres above sea level, the Wharfe is tidal here, and the parish has always been open to flooding from the Wharfe and the Ouse. Ossendyke, spelled Ozendyke for the hamlet, lies two miles west along the B1223.

Ryther never had a station of its own. Ulleskelf station is about 1.9 miles west, and the old Cawood, Wistow and Selby Light Railway once ran from Cawood.
