The A162 London Road was built as a turnpike in 1769, and Main Street and the major part of the village lie east of the junction with it. Three Grade II listed stone houses from the 17th to 19th centuries stand near the Main Street and Church Street junction: Laurel Farm, Barkston House and Turpin Hall Farm. The two shops and the post office that used to be on Main Street are now private homes.
The village has two pubs, the Ash Tree, on the site of an old coaching inn, and the Boot and Shoe, plus a village hall, a primary school dating from 1856 and Holy Trinity church, built in 1880 as a chapel of ease. The Ash in the name is the great ash tree where the old wapentake of Barkston Ash is said to have met.
